Facts and Justification
Aregnaz Manukyan, a member of the “Mother Armenia” party and a candidate for Member of Parliament from the “Prosperous Armenia” party (PAP), was arrested on July 9.
Aregnaz Manukyan’s criminal prosecution is derived from the charges brought against her party colleague and associate Andranik Tevanyan, which the Armenian Center for Political Rights assesses as being politically motivated (in Armenian). According to the indictment (in Armenian), the information containing state secrets allegedly obtained by Andranik Tevanyan was transferred to him by Aregnaz Manukyan.
Initially, Aregnaz Manukyan was involved in the investigation as a witness, and her apartment was searched on June 12 (in Armenian). About a month later, on July 9, Aregnaz Manukyan was detained and subsequently arrested.
The Armenian Center for Political Rights finds that the analysis of the circumstances of Andranik Tevanyan’s case and the justification for the political motivation of the prosecution are equally applicable to Aregnaz Manukyan’s case (in Armenian). Further details are available on the page concerning the persecution of Andranik Tevanyan (in Armenian).
Political motives of the persecution
● To attempt to “legitimize” the election results by excluding the PAP from Parliament and ensuring the ruling Civil Contract party has qualified majority in Parliament.
