In recent years, the scale of political persecution in Armenia, together with the diversity of methods employed, has created a new reality. Whereas in the past attempts were made to conceal such practices, they are now carried out openly. For the past two years, the human rights defenders of the Armenian Center for Political Rights (ACPR) have been systematically examining and documenting instances of political persecution in Armenia. We inform both the Armenian public and international human rights bodies about these developments.
A widespread perception holds that international organizations are currently “deaf” to violations of political rights due to prevailing geopolitical considerations. However, ACPR’s experience demonstrates that consistent and targeted engagement can pierce the wall of silence and produce tangible results.
We are convinced that professional and sustained cooperation with international human rights mechanisms, including the Council of Europe, the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights (OSCE/ODIHR), and relevant United Nations bodies can exert a restraining influence on the Armenian authorities.
For two years, ACPR members have contributed their time, expertise, and energy on a voluntary basis, and they will continue to do so. Nevertheless, given the unprecedented scale of political persecution in Armenia today and the urgent need for a timely and professional response, ACPR must institutionalize its work and engage permanent experts.
Accordingly, ACPR is launching a fundraising campaign, while continuing to uphold the transparency and independence of its activities. Every contribution, large or small, will be significant in helping to curb political persecution in Armenia. The funds raised will enable us to respond more swiftly and on a larger scale.
In order to safeguard its impartiality, ACPR will not accept donations from:
- Executive bodies of states;
- Organizations or individuals whose activities contradict ACPR’s mission and objectives. Any such donation will be returned.
Irrespective of the donor, ACPR will not accept contributions exceeding 2,000,000 AMD from a single individual within a given year. ACPR reserves the right, in all cases, to return a donation if it may call into question the organization’s independence or impartiality.
Each year, ACPR will publish a public report detailing the purposes for which the collected funds have been expended.
